FAQ's

Q: Are all the Ronald McDonald Houses connected?

A: Ronald McDonald Houses are all licensees of Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC), an Illinois non-profit corporation. Each Ronald McDonald House is a separate, non-profit 501(c)3 corporation, with its own board of directors.

Q: How did Ronald McDonald House get started?

A: The first Ronald McDonald House in the U.S. started in 1974 when, former Philadelphia Eagles football player, Fred Hill’s daughter was being treated for leukemia. While at the hospital, Hill noticed many families from outside Philadelphia were sleeping in the hospital because they couldn't afford lodging. Working with local McDonald's owners, he created the first Ronald McDonald House to provide affordable accommodations for the families of critically ill children. The Orange County Ronald McDonald House opened in 1989.  Today, there are more than 270 Ronald McDonald Houses worldwide.

Q: How is the Orange County Ronald McDonald House funded?

A: Generous supporters like you help fund the Orange County Ronald McDonald House. The majority of our contributions come from individuals, organizations and businesses within our community.

Q: Doesn’t McDonald’s fund Ronald McDonald Houses?

A: McDonald’s Corporation and local McDonald’s restaurant owner/operators generously fund portions of the annual operating costs of the Houses. The remainder of the annual operating income comes from individuals, organizations and corporate donors.

Q: How much does it cost to stay at the Orange County Ronald McDonald House?

A: Although the actual cost to operate a room is approximately $150 a night, families are requested to donate $10 a night. However, the fee is waived for those who cannot afford it. The difference is made up through donations. Thanks to your contributions, the Orange County Ronald McDonald House never turns a family with a child in need of treatment away because of their inability to pay.
