Carlo’s Story: It started with a small lump. Then a high fever. That’s why Toni Santiago rushed her son Carlo to the emergency room in Hong Kong. The Santiago Family had just moved from the United States to Hong Kong for work. Toni noticed the small lump on Carlo’s neck, he was flush with a fever. She would soon shockingly learn that cancerous tumors had been growing throughout Carlo’s body. The Santiago’s immediately flew their only child to Southern California for specialized treatment, including a stem cell transplant. Toni and her husband Sam are staying at the Orange County Ronald McDonald House while Carlo courageously fights the disease at a nearby hospital. “I am thankful for the Orange County Ronald McDonald House,” says Toni. “This House has truly become our home.” Carlo is now undergoing what will hopefully be his last round of treatment, and he faces it with a sense of humor and knowledge of someone way beyond his years. “Carlo knows all his medications and treatments,” says Toni. “He tells the nurses and doctors what drugs make him sick, and which ones make him feel better.” On his good days, Carlo entertains everyone by telling jokes, and playing the piano. When he grows up Carlo wants to become a pediatric oncologist. Click here to make a donation in Carlo's honor. |
